What’s the weirdest way you’ve ever made a new friend? . .
.

For me, it’s the meeting with this guy that takes the cake. 15-ish years ago, in my past life as a college student at art school, he sold me expired condoms. The next day, I stormed into the store, slammed the box on the counter and raged for a solid 5 minutes about how irresponsible he was and (because I know it’s hard to imagine, but I was a very dramatic teenager) I promised that if I got pregnant because of his expired condoms, I would leave my illegitimate child on his doorstep for him to deal with. He was mostly un-phased by all my dramatics, apologized and replaced my box of condoms. I left the store feeling vindicated. A few days later, though when I passed him in the parking lot at school, I was slightly mortified. I’m not sure what happened after that, but I spent the next year hanging out in that sex shop with him almost every night after school. We’d order tacos and drink horchatas, watch the prostitutes get picked up outside and make bets on which construction workers would buy the gay porn. At Halloween time, he let me play dress up in ALL of the slutty costumes and after closing time, we’d often make our way to the 24 hour diner down the street. We’d hang out in his tiny apartment and he’d spin records all night long. He’d tell me stories of his world travels and I’d listen in awe, wishing that I had been brave enough to do half of the things he’d done. He was an epic storyteller, one of the most interesting people I had ever known and for at least a chapter of my life, he was my very best friend. Tonight, we finally got to hug each other again after what we figured had to be at least a decade. It’s always an incredible feeling to be in the company of a forever friend- one who shaped your life in some way or another and who will always hold a special place in your heart. I’ll love you forever, sweet friend, even though you did sell me expired condoms... .

It’s easy to be full of gratitude on the good days, but how do you keep the vibes high when you’re in a funk, doing something you don’t enjoy or have a streak of bad luck? It’s all about mindset. Sometimes, you have to turn it on its head.

Spending my whole Sunday cleaning the house and doing laundry was a major bummer. I hate house work. I hate being inside on a beautiful day. Bah humbug.
.

But you know what? I was stuck cleaning the house on Sunday because I put it off so many times- choosing instead to spend time with friends and family. How lucky am I to have so many beautiful relationships in my life that ask for my attention?
.

And how lucky am I to own a home in a great neighborhood to raise my boys in? And how lucky are we to have plenty of clothes to wear and dishes to eat off of? This house, this mess, it’s all a symbol of our abundance. And for all that, I can surely find gratitude.

It’s amazing how my #relationshipgoals have evolved. Through learning to love, honor and respect myself, I’ve realized what’s really important to me in a partnership. .

As I’ve gained my independence and been able to provide for myself and my family on my own, the “things” I value in another person have shifted from what they can do for me to how they can make me feel- whether I feel good about myself when I’m with them, if we laugh together, have fun together, if I feel safe, comfortable, desired, appreciated, admired and adored.
.

I’ve learned that I have to be the model- I have to show/teach others how to love me by example and vibrate at the frequency of love and happiness In order to attract a partner on the same level.
.

And perhaps the most important part of this whole process has been learning, understanding and knowing that I do deserve all of that and more. And so do you. .

I’m not afraid to be alone because I know that I am enough. And you shouldn’t be afraid either. The time you spend getting to know yourself, learning to love yourself and discovering what you truly want/need will be invaluable to future you and your future relationships. Do the work, people. Make yourself a priority. Do. You.

“No one is ever going to love you.” His words echoed in my mind.
.

One failed relationship after another. One emotionally abusive boyfriend after another. The lies, the cheating, the abandonment. The same patterns playing out on repeat. And no matter how hard I loved them, it just wasn’t enough. No one ever stayed.
.

He was right, I resigned. No one would ever love me. How could they? I wasn’t pretty enough. I wasn’t skinny enough. I wasn’t funny enough. I was awkward. I had two kids with another man. I’d never be worthy of love. No one would ever want me. I would be alone forever.
.

It was only after I had spent most of my life chasing true, unconditional love in the men I gave my heart, soul and body to that I began to understand that something was missing. It was only after years (and years) of heartache that I began to look inward for the love I craved. It was only after deep spiritual work and soul searching that I began to grasp the concept of self love. .

The thing is, we attract what we put out. And time and time again, I would attract broken, loveless men who weren’t at all capable of loving me. Do you know why? Because they didn’t love themselves. And I didn’t love myself. It was a recipe for disaster and once I was able to shed light on the viscous cycle I had been carrying out, I could finally begin to heal those old wounds, to forgive myself, to find happiness and fulfillment within myself and then one day, I even started to kind of like myself. Today was exhausting and amazing and so damn beautiful! I stepped WAY out of my comfort zone when I agreed to lead 50+ yogis for our #internationalyogaday celebration, headset and all. Even though my hands were shaking (and sometimes my voice) I did it. And I’m so grateful for the opportunity! .

Thank you so much to @mcassiecamp and @kula_yoga_mi for organizing this event. It made my heart so happy to see so many of the local yoga studios come out to this event as one big happy community. We’re all in this together. Today, we unite Cocoa Beach. Tomorrow, the world. .

It’s #internationalyogaday and I’m celebrating with a home practice and heart full of gratitude. Yoga has been so many things for me- my church, my therapist, my workout, my solace, my escape. #dare2barechallenge Day 14: We made it! Today, I planned to hit the beach in my bikini, but the weather is if-ey and my kids were feeling a little under the weather. But I live in paradise. My goal is to heal myself- to stop the buck for my boys. To show them/teach them how to live in the light, to be healthy in mind body and soul and to always be kind. My goal is to share my story- to scream it from the rooftops so that no one else will ever feel alone in their pain or be controlled by shame. My goal is to bring healing, self love & empowerment to the masses. My goal is to help other women heal themselves through adventure, travel & exploration. My goal is to travel the world with my kids and prove that women can do absolutely anything they set their minds to (including remodeling an entire house.) My goals... they just keep growing and it all started with a quote on a bikini yoga photo on #Instagram that led me to my mentor Gabby Bernstein, her book Spirit Junkie and the trainings that became a catalyst in turning my life around. I. Shit. You. Not.

Anything is possible. Believe that. You were given your dreams for a reason. Own that. I’m here for you, cheering you on and loving the fuck out of you. Take that to heart. .
